Discover the beautiful surroundings of Willemstad by bike and experience the unique combination of nature, water, and military history. Willemstad is one of the eleven fortified towns of the Zuiderwaterlinie, the oldest and longest waterline in the Netherlands. This line has a total length of approximately 160 kilometers and is divided into five cycling routes of approximately 40 to 50 kilometers. Each route connects several fortified towns, forts, and waterworks and offers plenty of opportunities to stop along the way at places of interest and restaurants.
If you don't have a bike with you, you can rent one in Willemstad at "Saarloos Tweewielers" (https://www.saarloostweewielers.nl/wp/verhuur-rijwielen/). Pick-up and return are possible 7 days a week. We strongly recommend booking in advance.

Statement by Willemstad
Travel distance from Het Willemshuis: 0 km. Route length: 46 km.

It was William of Orange himself who ordered that two polder villages be turned into impregnable fortified towns: Willemstad and Klundert. Did the enemy still come too close? Then the surrounding area was flooded. Later, a ring of forts provided additional protection. And the best part is: many of these fortifications are still intact. View the route
.
West Brabant Water Line
Travel distance from Het Willemshuis: 34 km. Route length: 45 km.

The oldest part of the Zuiderwaterlinie is around fortified towns of Bergen op Zoom and Steenbergen. What remains of it? A surprising amount! Get on your bike and discover the military past of West Brabant. View the route
.
Geertruidenberg and Breda
Travel distance from Het Willemshuis: 46 km. Route length: 43 km.

The fortified towns of Geertruidenberg and Breda were important links in the Southern Water Line. Moats, ramparts and bulwarks still remind us of this. The area between the fortified towns was too high to be flooded. Therefore, entrenchments and lines were built here. They now form the military backdrop for this cycle route full of surprises. .
Den Bosch and Heusden
Travel distance from Het Willemshuis: 70 km. Route length: 52 km.

Two fortified towns chose a different side during the Revolt: Heusden supported the Prince of Orange, the Catholic 's-Hertogenbosch remained loyal to the Spanish king for a long time. Meanwhile, the fortifications around both cities have been beautifully restored. In between, inundation areas, entrenchments and zigzagging lines still mark the landscape. View the route
.
Grave and Ravenstein
Travel distance from Het Willemshuis: 107 km. Route length: 55 km.

In northeastern Brabant, the Meuse meanders past three fortified towns: Grave, Ravenstein and Megen. They all have cobblestone streets, but otherwise what strikes you most is how different they are. And the many Catholic churches and monasteries? For a long time, part of the area fell under German principalities where religious freedom prevailed. Therefore, Catholic clergy sought refuge here.
